Make sure your windows don’t need changing in 8 to 10 years time
Over the past 12 years we have watched the likes of Alibaba and All China making it really easy for anyone to import, just about anything including upvc profiles and hardware for windows and doors. Without patent law in China, copies are the norm and just the way things are done in this part of the world.
Just because something at a glance looks the same doesn’t mean it is the same, it’s normally just a case of looking more closely and then we start to see the flaws. This is the same for uPVC window and door profiles. These visible imperfections are the difference between your windows lasting 25 to 30 years compared to 8 to 10 years. Quality uPVC should be silky to the touch and have a visible sheen finish, similar to a freshly waxed car. Copy or cheap profiles are almost chalky to the touch and without that sheen, so as soon as the windows and doors are installed they start dealing with the elements and this is when they can be compared to that freshly waxed car and because copy or cheap profiles are dullish and chalky this means the dirt and grease starts to cling to the profiles which in turn starts to work its way inside the plastic which then changes the molecules and structure of the plastic which causes the plastic to harden causing brittleness and cracking along with discolouration.
This brings us onto why some uPVC window and door companies opt for copy or cheap profiles, it’s simply because they can get three profiles for the price of one. The temptation of getting 3 for the normal price of 1, is just too much of a temptation, plus they will probably last for 10 years and if they don’t and they start to get too many comebacks, they just close the company and then open it back up but under a new name.
If your asking yourself but how can it be so much cheaper, so we can look at labour costs, the large European and North American producers back in the late 90s invested in automated machine lines saving on the labour costs so they didn’t lose their industry to China. Now it only takes few workers to oversee the automated processing lines that now run 24-7-365 days a year.
This only leaves the mixture used to make the profiles which are the difference between good and bad uPVC windows and doors. So if your getting quotations for your new uPVC windows and doors and the profiles match the description above, then the 20% saving will be the quality of the upvc profiles that the company is using. Just remember three lengths for the price of one because steel, glass, wages, rent and all the other running cost are approximately the same for us all. We are happy to show our customers uPVC windows and doors that have been installed for more than 10 years and look as good today, as the day they were installed.
